The "EU-Japan Network for Digital Foundations" held its kickoff symposium on May 22-23, 2025, at Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, in Tokyo Waterfront. It was hosted by University of Tsukuba and co-hosted by Université Grenoble Alpes in cooperation with the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, the French Embassy in Japan, the Mission of Japan to the European Union, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan, and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Thanks to the active engagement of the approximately seventy participants from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Japan, the symposium was a great success. Participants had two days of dynamic discussions, knowledge exchange, and the cultivation of new partnerships in the digital foundations (semiconductors, quantum technology, AI, etc.) and their application in various fields, including green transformation, bio- and life sciences. These interactions helped deepen mutual understanding among universities, research institutions, funding agencies and government agencies in Europe and Japan, and have created a robust foundation for a future collaboration designed to navigate together uncertain times.

The participants have agreed to hold the second symposium of the EU-Japan Network for Digital Foundations in Europe next year.
